MIXED PICKLES, an eclectic shop in North Berkeley's
Gourmet Ghetto featuring antiques, collectibles, and specialty items is celebrating its eleventh
anniversary this year.
One you've past the olive trees with twinkling lights and the window displays of intriguing
objects and Italian chandeliers, shoppers find themselves surrounded by an ever-changing
collection of unique items. They may find a set of sailboat glasses from the 1940's, sturdy and
colorful California pottery, lamp shades made from vintage fabrics, or almond scented soaps.
The store features a wide selection of jewelry ranging from Victorian mourning brooches to
chunky, carved Bakelite bracelets from the 1930s and glittering rhinestone necklaces from the
1950's. Tiaras, thimbles, and all manner of costume jewelry and semiprecious stones fill the
display cases.
Furniture shoppers will always find a good selection of dressers, vanities, end tables and cast
iron Victorian beds. Unusual pieces such as a portable French enamel baby tub and glamorous
1930's Hollywood-era glass coffee table perched on a carved wood plumed feather base typify
the rare items that await the discerning customer.
Those looking for just the right outfit will find a tempting selection of vintage clothes.
Shoppers may find a 1950's beaded chiffon cocktail dress, an elaborately embroidered Chinese
robe, or a never worn 1940's sun dress. There's always a rack of warm wool coats for the
practical-minded, too.
Shoppers setting the table for a holiday or just an everyday meal can find china, cutlery, cake
stands, wine glasses, and decanters. The discriminating host or hostess will be pleased to
discover antique French absinthe glasses and slotted spoons.
Owner, Sharon Hoyle, usually travels to France each fall, bringing back linen sheets,
nightgowns, hand loomed textiles, and other treasures to add to the store's collection. Tea towels,
1940's barkcloth and brocade curtains, and hankies are always on hand, too.
Sharon also stocks the store with an intriguing selection of hand blocked and letterpress cards,
and wrapping paper, candles, and soaps.
So, stop by Mixed Pickles at 1746 Shattuck Avenue and see what treasures await you. The
store is open Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 5:30, with extended hours through the
holiday season.
